Fred Kimber

Oxford Cricket Club16 Jun - 11:14

-

Fred Kimber who has died recently aged 94 was a former Treasurer of the club and of Headington United CC, an earlier incarnation. He joined Headington in 1946 and recalled playing cricket on the Manor Ground that they shared with the club’s football team (later Oxford United). A decent middle order batsman he played for the club in an era when they won the Airey Cup number of times.

He took on the role of Club Secretary in 1958 and held the position until 1970. During this period, he also doubled up as Club Treasurer for a few years. In the mid-1980s he returned to the role of Treasurer and held the position until 2000, the last seven years coming after Oxford CC’s formation in 1994.

In addition to these positions, perhaps more notably he managed the clubhouse bar on the Barton Road ground. This involved replenishing stock from suppliers, organising the volunteer bar rota, and producing the bar accounts each year. Everything was handled with great efficiency. It is no understatement to say that the whole club revolved around Freddie.

One of two surviving trustees on the Barton Road ground, he oversaw the sale of the ground in 2014, the proceeds going to Oxford CC. He was a Life Vice-President of the Club.

The funeral will be held at the Oxford Crematorium on Tuesday 24 June at 10.00am with a reception afterwards at the Masons Arms, Headington Quarry.
