Last week's emphatic victory at Watlington had given the 4s a perfect start to the season which they looked to continue going into their first home game, facing a Bicester and North Oxford side who had won their opening game by a similarly sizable margin. Despite losing yet another toss, captain Edward Baldock got what he wanted once again as Oxford were put in to bat.
The home side looked to be getting off to a fairly slow start after the opening partnership of Andy Smith and Isaac Gavaghan had scored just 1 run off the opening 2 overs, however this changed in the next over when Smith pulled the opening bowler into a hedge for a huge 6. The game took roughly 5 minutes to resume as numerous members of the batting side struggled to locate the ball which was stuck halfway up in the hedge, eventually it was found however and the game resumed, the score accelerating further as Smith took 15 off an over from the other opener. The partnership soon passed 50 meaning the 4s had reached the half century mark without losing a wicket for the second week running. When Smith eventually departed for 38 the score was at 60 off 16 overs and the 4s had a great foundation to build upon as Steve Cootes came to the crease, yet in the last over before drinks disaster struck. Gavaghan was dismissed in dramatic fashion, run out off a no ball, bringing his innings to an end for a steady 18. Cootes then dispatched the spinner for a boundary before being bowled by a googly, leaving Oxford 3 down at drinks.
The collapse continued in the following over as James Oates and Max Baldock both departed in the space of 3 balls, Oates caught in the leg side off a ball which stopped in the pitch and Baldock caught behind, leaving his role in finding the ball in the hedge as his best contribution to the innings. A few overs later, the umpire gave Roger Young out LBW, meaning that the home side had fallen from 73-1 to 104-6 with 14 overs still left. Fortunately, Patrick Holmes and Richard Pye began to rebuild things, before the latter was also out LBW. This brought in the skipper, determined to ensure that the 4s batted their full allocation of overs. Holmes then holed out in the 32nd over for 18, bringing a crucial knock in preventing a further collapse to an end. Matty Wyatt then joined the captain and did his job in staying in and allowing Baldock to take the strike. The skipper helped guide Oxford to a total of 155 with 30 not out, though some may argue he was lucky to stay on the field after his uncalled for outbursts at the square leg umpire. The innings was brought to a close in the 40th over as Wyatt and Theo Baldock were bowled in successive balls.
Oxford's 155 on a lively wicket with a ridiculously slow outfield was going to be difficult for the visitors to chase and this appeared to be the case as Matty Wyatt and Edward Baldock began their opening spells. The captain removed Bicester's numbers 2 and 3 in the 4th over of the innings and Wyatt was unlucky not to take the 3rd as wicketkeeper Max Baldock put down a difficult chance off the other opener. With the visitors somewhat recovering to 33-2, it was shaping up to be a tight match, however it came to a sudden halt as the number 4 batsman top edged a delivery into his head. After about 45 minutes, the injured player was eventually able to be moved off the pitch and is thankfully now OK. After this incident, the two captains agreed to abandon the match with the visitors unwilling to carry on. An unfortunate end to what could have been a cracker, yet it does mean that the 4s remain unbeaten this season.
